UN Wants to Use Blockchain & DLT in Climate Action

The United Nations continues to make efforts to promote blockchain technology and plans to use it in its action on climate change.

On January 22, the UN posted a new entry in its blog announcing that UN Climate Change secretariat (UNFCCC) created a coalition called Climate Chain Coalition (CCC) that will explore the possibilities of using blockchain and other DLT technologies in support of climate action. There are currently 32 members in the coalition and the membership is still open.

Massamba Thioye of the UNFCCC secretariat who leads its work exploring DLT and blockchain said:

"The UN Climate Change secretariat recognizes the potential of blockchain technology to contribute to enhanced climate action and sustainability. To fully and promptly mobilize this potential, broad collaboration among stakeholders is needed to direct resources to priority areas, avoid duplication of effort, and help avoid the pitfalls of working on a new technology with countless unknowns."

The United Nations is not unfamiliar with blockchain technology and tries to use its advantages to solve global problems. It was announced in November 2017 that the UN in partnership with the World Identity Network will develop a pilot blockchain-project aimed at fighting child trafficking.
