Cryptocurrency Mining Driving Computing Boom, Says Sergey Brin

May 7, 2018

The rapid growth of popularity of mining devices has increased the demand for computing power, which is one of the causes of a global "boom of computing". Google co-founder Sergey Brin wrote it in a letter to investors.

Brin wrote that the activity in the cryptocurrency industry is one of the main factors that has sped up Google's processor by almost 200,000 times over the last 20 years. He noted that computer power has increased not only due to advanced graphics in computer games, but also because of "GPU-friendly proof-of-work algorithms found in some of today’s leading cryptocurrencies, such as Ethereum."

According to Brin, two other major factors that drive the boom of computing are:

  • Moore's Law (the number of transistors in chips doubles every two years);
  • Significant progress in the development of Machine Learning

It is worthy to note that Google is reportedly considering using blockchain technology in its products. In March it was reported that the company has started the development of its own blockchain.
