UNICEF Launches Website for Crypto Mining
May 7, 2018
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Australia has started a website titled “The Hope Page” which when visited activates Monero coin mining on the user’s PC. Mining is performed via browser with AuthedMine script that is an enhanced version to Coinhive API.
“[This will] allow Australians to provide help and hope to vulnerable children by simply opening the page while they are online”, UNICEF representative said to Australian ITnews.
When clicking The Hope Page the user is offered to choose capacity level for mining. The longer guests remain on the site, the more cryptocurrency they mine.
“Mining is perfectly safe for your computer. If you're ever worried about power consumption, turn down the amount of processing power you're donating», the web source reports.
As director of fundraising and communications for UNICEF Australia Jennifer Tierney notes, this project is to help the organization to draw public attention to the problems caused by humanitarian crisis and raise necessary funds to support children suffered from those.
Each mined coin gets automatically converted into fiat and transferred to the fund. The raised money is supposed to be spent for basic necessities like water, food and medicines to help disadvantaged children worldwide.
It is to be added that this is one of the few cases Coinhive is used well meant. Usually the service is exploited by scammers who integrate the code into governmental sites or mobile apps for personal gain.
