March 12, 2018

The further development of Ethereum blockchain is one of the main goals of Ethereum's dev team. A non-profit organizations Ethereum Foundation that specializes in advancing and supporting of Ethereum network and other software has announced the list of beneficiaries of the first wave of grants.

According to the announcement, there are 13 project that have received more than $2.5 million of grants combined. These project are aimed at the development of scalability, security, user interface study and other important parts of Ethereum blockchain.

The launch of this subsidy program was announced by the co-founder of Ethereum Vitalik Buterin on January 2, 2018. He told at the time that "scalability as perhaps the single most important key technical challenge" and that it must be addressed as soon as possible.

The announcement says:

"These grants will fuel the teams working hard at research & development to support the entire ecosystem. Furthermore, we hope that these grants will signal to the community what we think are the missing pieces in the ecosystem that need more support. Said in another way, the Foundation is here to serve teams and individuals that are working to prevent a tragedy of the commons."

Grants will help the community of Ethereum to further develop distributed applications and smart contracts and make them better. The vast majority of grants went to the projects, aimed at solving scalability problems. L4 Research got scalability grant of $1.5 million to work on state channels research, and Prysmatic Labs received scalability grant of $100 thousand to work on sharding implementation.
